1 dead in Six Corners accident; Springfield police, fire on scene of reported ‘explosion’

SPRINGFIELD – One man is dead following a tank explosion Tuesday morning at Knox and Foster streets in the city’s Six Corners neighborhood.

The man, whose name is not being disclosed, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The scene was cordoned off by police.

Parts from the car appeared to be scattered around the area.

Details are limited, but Springfield Police spokesman Ryan Walsh confirmed that an adult man was fatally injured in what he described as the explosion of a portable oxygen tank.

Police were called to the scene by callers reporting an explosion at about 10:50 a.m.

The incident is being investigated by the Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad and the state Fire Marshal.
