Mehul Choksi, diamond trader wanted in the PNB scam goes missing: Reports

Fugitive diamond trader, Mehul Choksi, wanted by Indian authorities in the alleged multi crore fraud caused to (PNB) has allegedly gone missing in Antigua and Barbuda.

Confirming the development, Choksi’s counsel Vijay Aggarwal told ET, “ The local police are investigating the matter. The family is in the dark and is worried about his safety,” Aggarwal told ET.

Choksi along with his nephew Nirav Modi are wanted in an alleged over Rs 13,500 crore fraud caused to PNB. Modi is currently lodged at London’s Wandsworth prison, Choksi is believed to be holed up in Antigua. While Modi has been declared fugitive economic offender (FEO) under the, The Fugitive Economic Offenders (FEO) Act, 2018, the courts are hearing ED’s plea to declare Choksi as an FEO.Declaration as an FEO enables investigating agencies to seize the person’s properties.

On May 24, “Antiguanewsroom”, a local media outlet, quoted Commissioner of Police Atlee Rodney saying that the force is “following up on the whereabouts of Indian businessman Mehul Choksi”, who is “rumoured” to be missing at this time”.

Another article by the same news portal stated that the police are seeking the assistance of the public in knowing the whereabouts of Choksi., “…the Police are investigating a Missing Person Report made of 62-year-old Mehul Choksi of Jolly Harbour. Mehul was reported missing on Sunday 23rd May 2021 at the Johnson Point Police Station,” the report reads. “He was last seen at about 5:15 P.M on the above-mentioned date before leaving home in a motorcar which has since been recovered,” it adds.
