Odisha: NIT Rourkela student makes device that can stop oxygen wastage | Bhubaneswar News

ROURKELA: A fourth-year integrated MSc physics student of National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, has invented a device ‘Oxyserve’ which can help save about 60 to 70% medical oxygen. The device appears extremely useful in the wake of the recent oxygen crisis that had plagued the country.
Rupesh Mahore’s research paper and the device has been accepted at ICRTST 21 (International Conference on Recent Trends in Science & Technology-2021) without any modification. Rupesh is now in consultation with legal experts to formally apply for a patent before going for commercial production of the device.
Rupesh observed that while using continuous flow of oxygen, more than half of the gas is wasted between the time it leaves the cylinder and it is exhaled. With an aim to stop this wastage, Rupesh started research some six months back. His younger brother Gundendra Mahore joined him.
After several rounds of experiment, they developed a pulse width modulated flux control oxygen conservation device and named it ‘Oxyserve’. Unlike the conventional oxygen device, ‘Oxyserve’ through its respiratory sensors and flow control valve can save 60-70% oxygen.
The device with a closed loop PID algorithm can adjust the oxygen flow every second, as per a patient’s medical requirement. In case of the sensor’s failure. the micro-controller has an Inbuilt Wi-Fi module which continuously sends data, detects failure and sends warning signal.
